NEW PUBLICATION
BRINGS CONTEMPORARY APPROACH TO TURKISH LITERATURE
The Culture and
Tourism Ministry has released a four volume publication titled “The History of Turkish
Literature” under the general editorship of Professor Talat Halman, founding chairman of
Bilkent University’s department of Turkish Literature.
The series features 127 literary works of significance by 88 authors from Turkey as well
as abroad, bringing together the leading names in the field.
The books are arranged according to periods in which significant political and cultural
transformations took place throughout Turkish history.
The first volume introduces Turkish literature from its beginnings to the conquest of
Ýstanbul in 1453; the second volume covers the Reform Period, 1453 to 1860; the third
stretches from 1860 to 1923, the declaration of the Turkish Republic; and the fourth
covers the period from 1923 to the 21st century.
The series is the first of its kind in that it takes a contemporary scientific approach to
historical development of Turkish literature, serving as a comprehensive source for
researchers and those interested in Turkish literature.
The detailed Turkish literature chronology at the end of the fourth volume provides
important dates regarding the birth and death of important figures in Turkish literature
as well as the dates the works were produced along with those of important social and
political events that shaped Turkish cultural life.
Taking the reader on a joyous journey through centuries of adventure, the work is the
culmination of a three-year effort with the support of authors and editors as well as the
Culture and Tourism Ministry. The publication was released by an editorial team consisting
of Halman, Osman Horata, Yakup Çelik, Nurettin Demir, Mehmet Kalpaklý, Ramazan Korkmaz
and M. Öcal Oðuz under the auspices of the Culture and Tourism Ministry.
